Tree removal in Woodinville
In Woodinville, all properties are required to meet a certain level of tree density, which is measured by the species and size of the tree. The size of the tree is measured by the DBH or diameter at breast height (4.5 feet above the ground). Tree credits are based on these 2 criteria so the larger the tree, the higher the credit.
How many trees can you remove?
2 healthy trees may be cut down within any 12-month period. An unlimited number of hazard or nuisance trees may be cut (with arborist report and permit), but if more than 2 of these type of trees are removed, no additional healthy trees can be cut down in the same 12-month period. You may be required to replant to keep tree density at the required limit.
What’s my required tree credit?
- Single-family residential lots less than 7,200 sq. ft.-30 tree credits per acre
- Downtown (CBD) zone-30 tree credits per acre
- All other properties within the City-60 tree credits per acre
Most tree removals require a permit, including hazard and nuisance tree removal. Removals are divided into tree plans and Tree Plan 4 is the one most homeowners need as it pertains to removing trees on your property, including healthy trees, trees in critical areas and hazard trees.
Questions about removal?
If an arborist report is needed, it must be done and filed by an arborist certified by the ISA and the arborist needs to have a secondary certification in tree risk assessment.
A tree inventory (list of trees on your property, their species and trunk diameter measured at DBH) must be submitted with your completed permit application. A partial inventory is acceptable if all required tree credits have been confirmed.
There are few exemptions to the code so if you have questions, call the Development Services Department at 425-489-2754.
